Index / Step 1 / Step 2 / Step 3 / Step 4 / Step 5 Step 2: 'ripping' the DVD The DVD has to be 'ripped' (or transferred) to your computer's hard drive in its entirity to make sure that the video and audio are perfectly synchronized. This is what this step deals with. (i) Once you've double-clicked on the 'FairUse Wizard' icon on your desktop you should see the following screen. Once you've read the conditions of using the software press 'I Agree'.
(ii) In this example, I'm going to 'rip' a DVD called 'The Very Best of Dad's Army'. On the screen which you are presented with next (below), enter a name for your new project (e.g. 'Dad's Army') and then click on 'Browse' to navigate to somewhere on your hard disk where you want to store the files. Once you've done this, press 'Next' *Note: ripping a whole DVD to your hard disk takes around 4-5 Gigabytes of space. Make sure you have space before you begin!*
(iii) You should now be presented with a pop-up box asking which DVD drive to use. As most people have only one of these, you should just be able to press 'OK' and then 'Next'.
(iv) The next screen shows you the different 'program chains' of the DVD. FairUse Wizard automatically selects the longest one, as this would be the film itself were this a feature film. The program chains listed here refer to five episodes, a 'selection box' featurette, and 'artist profiles'. The program chains usually directly correspond to the episode listings on the DVD box. In this case, therefore, the first five chains will be episodes, the sixth will be the featurette, and the last one the artists' profile. Once you have selected the program chain you wish to 'rip' to your hard disk, press 'Next'.
(v) The part of the DVD you selected above will now be transferred to your hard disk. Depending on the speed of your DVD drive, your computer's processor, and what you do at the same time as the program is running, this could take a while! The program tells you how long is left underneath the progress bar.
