Step 3: video clip selection

(i) Once the files have been transferred to your hard disk you will be presented with a screen similar to the one below. The slider allows you to go back and forward throughout the episode. By default, the whole episode or film is selected (the blue bar goes from end to end).

*Note: you may now remove the DVD from your DVD drive. You will no longer need it!*

Video Clip Selection 1

(ii) If you want to select just a portion of the episode or film, move the slider to the beginning of the desired segment and press the downward arrow next to 'Start' in the 'Frame Range' box. Then go to the end of the desired segment and press the downward arrow next to 'End'. Positioning can be fine-tuned using the left and right arrow keys on your keyboard.

Video Clip Selection 2

(iii) Finally, press 'Auto set' in the 'Cropping region' box for FairUse Wizard to automatically determine where the edges of the video are. This is more important for widescreen films where there is a lot of black at the top and bottom, as this would greatly increase the final filesize without increasing the quality of the compressed video.

Once FairUse Wizard has automatically set the cropping region, press 'Next'.

*Note: if the DVD you wish to extract clips from has subtitles, simply check the 'Include subpictures' box to retain them.*

Video Clip Selection 3

(iv) On the next screen simply press 'Auto Detect' and accept the settings FairUse Wizard automatically determines. Once you have done this, press 'Next'.
